The story begins in 1795 in the heart of Hoia Baciu forest in Romania, where twelve satanic worshippers under the leadership of the high Priestess Tamara, who during a ritual, announced that she will depart the coven to fulfill an ancient prophecy.

Tamara, explains that; as it is written in the book of shadows she inherited from her grandmother, the one that it has been chosen to host the spirit of the Queen of the witches, it has been born. Her mission is to find and prepare them to become the vessel in which the evil entity will continue serving Lucifer. Once the spirit of Muma Padurii,

(Muma Padurii means” the Mother of the Forest,” though “muma” is an archaic version of “mama” (mother), which has a fairy-tale overtone for the Romanian reader (somewhat analogous to using the archaic pronouns like “thou” and “thy” in English). A few other such words, typically protagonists of folktales, have this effect.

Characteristics Muma Padurii is a spirit of the forest in a very ugly and old woman’s body. Sometimes she can change her shape. She lives in a dark, dreadful, hidden little house.

Mother of the Forest kidnaps little children and enslaves them. In one of the popular stories, at some point, she tries to boil a little girl alive, in soup. However, the little girl’s brother outsmarts Muma Padurii and pushes the woman-monster in the oven instead, similar to the story of Hansel and Gretel. The story ends on a happy note when all kids are free to go back to their parents.

In modern culture

Instead of saying “She’s ugly,” Romanians sometimes say, “She looks like Muma Padurii”. Muma Padurii was adapted into a monster for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition:

Once she completes her mission she will be rewarded with the honor of the thirteen chair in the kingdom of hell, to serve Lucifer. See muma-padurii in Romanian Mythology.
